David,
I enjoyed your post. I might add that one of the big attractions of self-publishing is its appeal to the entrepreneurial spirit. People want to be their own boss, and self-publishing provides that opportunity.

Apparently another graduate from the school of Blue Sky Thinking of Journalism!

Your definition of both EDITORIAL and ADVERTORIAL should have begun with "Once Upon A Time..." because it is THAT skewed. Editorials are so biased these days ... from what businesses get selected to what is actually said about the few businesses lucky enough to get a positive write-up in a newspaper or other publications.

I've seen/read Advertorials that are as bad as you purport, but they're few and very far between. Most Advertorials are produced to let potential customers know more about the product or service, not just half-truths and lies as you seem to believe. Remember, what you say about Advertorials can and does apply to Trade Press Services -- just another name for Advertorial Marketing -- the essential difference is where they're placed: in trade publications exclusively.

Our Advertorials are just INFORMERCIALS positioned online AND handed-out, eMailed or offered as a take-with SELL SHEET. We use the owner's own words to make the businesses products or services more approachable -- worthy of the potential buyers' time and effort. Half-truths, distortions and lies are NOT the name of the game for us any more than they are for you.

I salute your Trade Press Services. We are really comrades in arms in an effort to inform potential buyers. No need to BASH Advertorial Marketing to make yourself seem better -- can't we all just get along?
